Situated in a Wetherill Park warehouse lot, amongst many retail outlets, is XS Espresso, a bustling little café with faux foliage hanging from the ceilings and brick walls.
The turnout on this Sunday afternoon is impressive. It’s so popular that people have to leave their names on a waiting list.
Owner, Rocky Gorgees tells me that the name of the café XS means extra small and is also a personal joke between his friends, when I enquire what this personal joke is, he responds with a mischievous look in his eyes, ‘One that shall remain a mystery.’
Papa Pasticerria pastries are available in the glass cabinet display near the counter, along with some of his nonna’s baked goods. The beans used here are from Campos coffees and the barista appears to be sending out takeaway coffee orders non-stop.
Aside from being a hip place to hang out for a coffee, Rocky also wanted XS Espresso to be a café that served Surry Hills-esque food at Western Sydney prices.
With an all day breakfast menu, I would highly recommend visiting at lunch, that way you have the luxury of both menus at your selection. Added to that, is also a dessert menu with the likes of churros, waffles, crepes, pancakes and there is a huge range of food on offer. I was able to whittle my selection down to just four choices for lunch.
The XS Stack is one of the most popular menu items, it’s a simple brunch of mashed avocados, two poached eggs, grilled tomatoes, sourdough bread and balsamic vinegar.
Or opt for something satiating like the Peri Peri chicken burger with thick cut fries. Sandwiched between very soft brioche buns is some crispy fried bacon and peri peri chicken. The chicken thigh pieces are grilled, coated in a sweet and spicy Peri Peri sauce and I really enjoy how juicy they are.
Monster shakes (not on the menu) I knew about these concoctions through instagram and I’ll admit, it was the over the top appearance that attracted to it. I customised our monster shakes and chose a natural peanut butter monster as well as a Tim Tam/Oreo Monster.
These shakes are large in life and size. Piled high with whipped cream, waffles, Tim Tams and melted Belgian chocolate practically gushing out of the beer mug, they’re real attention seekers. I mean, even the wooden board it arrives on gets a Priscilla treatment.
How do they taste? Very rich as you can imagine. Chocolate biscuits blended with vanilla ice cream is always going to make a deadly and sugary treat. The natural peanut butter monster is equally decadent, you may want to treat yourself for diabetes after consuming these.
Heed the name.
Fellow reader, by monster, I mean this shake really is a monster.
I often like to brag about how much stomach space I have but after polishing off poached eggs as well as half of my sister’s burger and fries, I could barely make it through my Tim Tam monster. I had a few sips of the peanut butter monster and knew I had to stop because I hated myself and shamefully left half of it behind.
XS Espresso will certainly supply you with a huge feed at friendly prices if you don’t mind taking a car out to Wetherill Park.
