The Wooden Whisk, St Leonards, Sydney

Head chef and owner Sean has worked in Michelin star kitchens in London and locally, at the Astral Tower at The Star, Sydney.

MsBrulee dined as a guest of The Wooden Whisk. Opinions however are my own.

Shaun now runs The Wooden Whisk a bustling family-friendly cafe in St Leonards. Saturdays are prime, as there’s all day breakfast and you also have the lunch menu to choose from.

The menu is a mixed bag of dishes: something for the health nuts, and plenty of options for the not so health conscious. I find ‘health food’ interesting but the hearty dishes look and sound very appealing here.

Coconut Mocha – Chocolately, fragrant in coconut and a surprise addition of mint

                  Latte Single Origin Roasters coffee

                   Lychee mojito juice

Just another normal-size portion meal for us

Eggs benedict w/ smoked salmon $15.90

Like many brunch spots,  there’s a choice of sides with your eggs benedict, here you can have: bacon, ham, spinach or mushroom. I don’t feel it’s necessary to mention prices of meals when eating out, this is Sydney after all, where overheads for restaurants and cafes are just insanely high. If it’s too expensive for you, don’t eat there. But I’m pleasantly surprised to note that if you drop another $0.40 the smoked salmon is yours. I’m sure by now, there’s no shortage of poached eggs descriptions. I’ll say this though, the eggs were nicely poached with the yolk still runny and the hollandaise sauce was rich, creamy and buttery. When we ask if the hollandaise sauce is made in house, Shaun replies assuredly ‘Oh yes! would never use any of the packet stuff!’

Grilled fillet of ocean trout, pearl cous cous, pesto aioli, tomato relish $19.90

Sitting atop a tumble of rocket and tomato-drenched pearl couscous, my fillet of ocean trout is cooked perfectly with a crispy crust. On it’s own the couscous is a little sweet, with a squeeze of lemon this fixes it right up.

Hickory smoked brisket burger – cheese, pickles, slaw, shoestring fries $17.90

Intended to be a special for just the weekend,  it’s remained on the specials board for months because it is in such demand. One taste of the brisket and you’ll understand why – it’s heavenly soft, moist with lashings of creamy mayonnaise mixed with BBQ sauce. It’s a touch too sweet for our preference but nevertheless extremely enjoyable.

There’s something for everyone at The Wooden Whisk. Got that breakfast with your family? Wooden Whisk is the place. Or how about a brunch date with that new someone in your life? Wooden Whisk have you covered. Don’t know what you want to eat but you want to eat something nice? Wooden Whisk-it and you’ll be in good hands.
