Take away coffee, fried chicken, slow cooked beef brisket and waffles.
Housed on the ground floor of the former Cadbury Chocolate factory, Kansas City Shuffle is run by Benny Sweeten (previously Joe Black and Rose Bay Diner) and chef Kayne Mordini (of Melbourne’s Proud Mary)
Kansas City Shuffle also refers to a con game that depends on the victim believing (correctly) that the conman is trying to con him, but being incorrect about how it’s going to be done. The jazz tune by Bennie Moten it’s named after is also pretty catchy. Already before having stepped foot in the cafe, I adore the concept.
‘The Magic’ is essentially a double ristretto with milk
Iced coffee includes a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dusting of cocoa powder on top.
The fried chicken is fabulous, the batter is not too thick and crunches well between the teeth. I have to mention the doughnut bun, it’s so soft and fluffy and the aioli is creamy with a hint of spice.
The beef brisket smoked 18 hours is wonderfully soft and melt in the mouth, the waffles are not sweet and I feel that it would benefit the dish if it was.
We would not have tried the chia pudding had the pancakes not been available, nevertheless it was still pleasant, the chia seeds having soaked in coconut milk and cinnamon. The fruit was all good too, puffed grains and hazelnuts lending crunch and nuttiness.
MsBrulee dined as guests of Kansas City Shuffle. Opinions however are my own.
