It’s old news that Green Peppercorn in my area of Fairfield has won best new restaurant in SMH’s Good Food Guide of 2013. Having lived in the western suburbs all my life, the restaurant scene here have always valued economy over aesthetics, not at Green Peppercorn though. The décor is lavash, decked out in golden Thai figures and a life-like sized buddha sits in lotus position at reception. The extravagant surrounds have a touch of whimsicality from the myriad of birdcages hanging from the ceiling, altogether it still feels luxurious.
You’re probably read the combination of the smoothie thinking ‘for real?’. We weren’t being difficult it’s just that we were recommended by the waitress who proclaimed the combo of avocado, mango and lychee ’the most famous’. We misunderstood the three flavours as one smoothie and so it was funny watching the smoothie makers taste it every 3 seconds to gauge it’s flavour. And let me just tell you the combination tasted great!
The marinated beef strips were quite tough, aside from that though it’s a fresh, crunchy salad tossed with cucumber, red onions, shallots, coriander, lime juice, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, tomatoes, lettuce and a hint of chilli powder.
Gang Penang is a comforting bowl of thick red curry with vegetables and shredded kaffir lime leaves. It is creamy, aromatic, sweet and will bestow food envy from others for sure, like it did to me.
Great service, enjoyable atmosphere and authentic food on the lower end of the scale make Green Peppercorn an all rounder, what more could you ask for?
