East meets West washed down with teapot cocktails
A great night at Bar Chinois will begin with a teapot cocktail, Coco Chanel $32 it is a clear teapot filled with a conversation-inducing mix of coconut tequila, pomme verte, cointreau, passionfruit, fresh lime, lemon sorbet and blood orange soda.
The food leans heavily on French with a light staccato of Asian accents. Small bites like the Spanner crab and cod croquettes, wasabi bearnaise $14 and Crispy slow cooked pork belly bite, pickled daikon, apple puree and chilli soy sauce $17. It’s the kind of cooking reserved for a dinner party. Bound to impress and containing that one secret ingredient you’ll never reveal to your closest friends.
Mains will be familiar to anyone and everyone Duck confit, onion fondant $16 and Red wine braised beef cheek, buttery mash, toasted seed and pickled ginger $18 giving you a feeling reminiscent of the one you experience tucking into a hot meal after a chilly day.
Classic French desserts will be enjoyable and the Asian touches are safe. A summery Pina colada creme brulee, biscotti $13 or the Fondant au chocolat with sesame tuiles and coconut $16 with an oozing molten chocolate filling guaranteed to make your knees weak.
